پوهنتون هرات در سال 1367 تاسیس گردیده است. این موسسه در حال حاضر دارای 14 پوهنځی و سه فلیال (بادغیس، غور و فراه) است. پوهنځی های پوهنتون هرات عبارت اند از پوهنځی ادارۀ عامه، ادبیات، اقتصاد، انجینری، تعلیم و تربیه، حقوق و علوم سیاسی، زراعت هرات، ژورنالیزم، ساینس، شرعیات، طب، کمپیوتر ساینس، هنرهای زیبا و وترنری. در حال حاضر در پوهنتون هرات حدود 10429 محصل اعم از پسر و دختر مصروف تحصیل اند. پوهنتون هرات پذیرای محصلان از سرتاسر کشور است که ازطریق امتحان کانکور ملی به این نهاد اکادمیک معرفی میگردند. پوهنتون هرات 334 عضو کدری دارد که فعالیتهای تدریسی و اداری آن را پیش میبرند.اکثر استادان پوهنتون هرات دارای درجه لیسانس اند؛ اما 100 نفر ماستر و 2 تن داکتر دارد.
