The State of Kansas was founded on the principle of freedom from slavery and oppression and today is still often referred to as “The Free State”. During the era known as “Bleeding Kansas”, Lawrence was at the heart of the anti-slavery movement and twice pro-slavery raiders burned the town to the ground. More than 150 years later, Democrats in Douglas County remain committed to progressive principles. In fact, the City of Lawrence is often referred to as the liberal oasis of the plains – a little blue dot in a sea of red – and we work hard to elect candidates who share our vision and our values.
