I am a mother, a wife, and a photographer... in that order. ;) I love my family first and foremost. I am a jack of many trades, I love creating, everything - from beautiful images, to costumes, to yummy foods. I love my craft closet, (which is full of stuff I can use to make things for you session that will make it that much more interesting) I love my costume and prop collection, I love thrift stores and flea markets, and I love a good sale anywhere. I enjoy reading good long books as well as writing, (although life has seemed to push that pastime to the side for the most part) and I rarely ever watch TV. I enjoy the outdoors and sports, and when I get old I will be be an avid traveler. ;) The sky amazes me and I have recently began taking random photos of it (awesome for overlays)...., I would love to have a second house at the ocean. I have an obsession with dying my hair random colors dependent upon my mood, and lately am rarely seen without a bandana tied around my head. If asked about my favorite color, I would have to say that I love them all (which is reflected throughout the walls of my home) yet I always gravitate toward things that are black. I am inspired in one way or another by everything that I have ever seen or experienced. (good, bad, and ugly) I like to think that I am a very intelligent person, I have an extremely sarcastic sense of humor at times, and I truly enjoy people. I have a very good sense of style, although my clothing choices for myself may not always reflect that as I am often in a tank top and jeans. (That said, you will never catch me dead in "mom" jeans) I drive too fast, and love music....all genres, like in a "My name is Amanda and I must be schizophrenic due to my playlist" kind of way.... I am not a "professionally trained photographer" so I can show you no credentials aside from my portfolio, as I am completely self taught and expand on my creativity and knowledge whenever possible. I suppose we can call me an extremely passionate artist of the lens, eager to capture and create some fantastic images for you. We are each an unique work of art, I am here to make sure your portraits reflect just that. I can produce a perfectly beautiful image of you sooc (straight out of camera), although rarely will I ever be satisfied with leaving it at that. I would like to consider myself extremely versatile in the creativity department. I love to do themed shoots, and can create costumes as well as other items necessary to pull them off. I have an eye for location, and love and appreciate natural light and texture. I am slightly "edgy", and love to think outside of the box. While there is nothing "conservative" about my taste or personality, I am able to mold my creative juices to suit the situation. So, no matter if you are looking to push the boundaries, or stay comfortably, simply, and beautifully artistic I am the photographer for you. I can do it all. As you view my images you’ll find out a lot about me. For instance, I see natural landscapes and the creatures that call them home as being at the same time grand works of art and also places for renewal, connection and education. It’s probably also apparent that I love to travel. The world is a big, beautiful and fascinating place, and my travel images aim to show it in all its glory. Photographing people and their cultures is one big reason I travel, and I hope my images tell you something about what makes all of us unique, along with all that we share. In short, despite all my photographs of nature and landscape, I am also a photographer of people, especially in those candid moments: with family or friends, with their pets, or simply alone. I’m very serious about photography as art, as a way to communicate what is more difficult (even impossible) to say with words. I don't tend to shoot popular subjects or incorporate trendy looks into my images. My influences from without are as numerous and varied as the whole world is. Influences from within include my past careers as an earth scientist and also a teacher. Both continue to inform my photography. For example my landscape images often highlight aspects of the region’s geologic history. My strong affinity for nature and animals of all kinds is a major influence as well. Global travel has given me a keen awareness of human impacts on the environment. We are forever connected after all - to the earth which gives us everything, and to each other. I am an avid blogger, and my newer images turn up there with interesting back-stories or in an educational context. Please click on the blog button to see what is current. In fact my first trip to Africa back in 2005 was where my interest in photography started that went on to change my life in so many ways. We live in Northern Wisconsin in Vilas County near Boulder Junction and are surrounded by lakes, rivers, and wildlife of all kinds. Vilas County is home to some 1320 lakes, which is one of the highest densities of lakes in the world. There are rivers and over 100 lakes within 7 miles of our home which offer some of the most spectacular landscapes a person could ever dream of. We decided to share our " Life in the Northwoods " of Northern Wisconsin with anyone who is interested in nature, wildlife and scenery photography. I have been fascinated by unconventional people for as long as I can remember. I was raised in a middle class suburban neighborhood where my family stood out as eccentrics. We were the only secular family on the block, and my parents encouraged us to run wild, play hard, and reject authority. My father told captivating stories about his unusual upbringing, many of which revolved around his mother, a paranoid schizophrenic, and his father, a merchant marine with severe PTSD. As I got older, I became curious about other people that lived unorthodox lifestyles. Having seen the work of Mary Ellen Mark and Diane Arbus, I knew that the camera could grant permission into the lives of complete strangers. In 2003, I moved to San Francisco, CA to study photography at The San Francisco Art Institute. After completing my BFA, I moved back to my home town San Diego, with my now husband Tahan, in tow. We currently reside in La Mesa, CA where I work full time as a photographer and am finishing my MFA through the Low Residency program at The San Francisco Art Institute. We are expecting our first child together this Christmas, 2015.
