The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center The 63,000 square-foot San Francisco Kroc Center redefines what a community center is all about. The unprecedented place of gathering and enrichment houses an array of education, sports, faith, arts and supportive programs. The programs, as well as the building itself, have been designed to stimulate the mind, body, and spirit, to provide hope, and to transform the life of each and every member of the community. Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, had a clear vision in mind: build state-of-art recreational and arts facilities in underserved communities throughout the nation to ensure that all individuals have equal opportunities to grow their natural gifts and talents. In 2003, Mrs. Kroc passed away, and entrusted to The Salvation Army the largest gift ever given to a private charity, for the express purpose of building and endowing Kroc Centers. A fulfillment of Joan Kroc’s vision, the Kroc Center in San Francisco, is comprised of five major components: a Center of Worship, an Education Center, an Aquatics Center, a Fitness and Recreation Center, and Special Event Facilities. The 65,000 square foot Suisun City Kroc Center is one of 26 Kroc Centers open and operating nationwide.  In 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive community center in San Diego, California.  Her goal was to create a center, supported in part by the community, where children and families would be exposed to different people, activities and arts that would otherwise be beyond their reach.  When Mrs. Kroc passes away in October 2003, sher left $1.5 billion - much of her estate - to The Salvation Army, by far the largest charitable gift ever given to the Army, and the largest single gift given to any single charity at one time.  the money was designated to build a series of state-of-the-art The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers nationwide patterned after the San Diego center.  A total of 27 centers will be operational once the project is complete.
