Fangs and Fur Fantasy Book Review | Where Reading Fantasy is a Family Affair

Title: Fate of the Tearling Author: Erika Johansen Publisher: Harper Date Published: November 29, 2016 Where I got the book: ARC won in a Goodreads giveaway *this is no way affects my review* Where You Can Get Book: AMAZON Synopsis from Goodreads: In less than a year, Kelsea Glynn has grown from an awkward teenager into a powerful monarch and a visionary leader. And as she has come into her own as the Queen of the Tearling, she has transformed her realm. But in her quest to end corruption and restore justice, she has made many enemies - chief among them the evil and feared Red Queen, who ordered the armies of Mortmesne to march against the Tear and crush them. To protect her people from such a devastating invasion, Kelsea did the unthinkable - naming the Mace, the trusted head of her personal guards, Regent in her place, she surrendered herself and her magical sapphires to her enemy. But the Mace will not rest until he and his men rescue their sovereign from her prison in Mortmesne. So, the endgame has begun and the fate of Queen Kelsea - and the Tearling itself - will be revealed... With The Fate of the Tearling, Erika Johansen draws her unforgettable story full of magic and adventure to a thrilling close. I really enjoyed the first two books of The Queen of the Tearling Trilogy and the way they married the feel of an epic fantasy novel with dystopian elements. I love Kelsea Raleigh--the way she's portrayed and her believable growth from altruistic young woman to someone who's willing to put aside their morals to do what needs to be done. There's a progressively dark feeling to these novels. I still love the setting. We remain in the world Johansen built, but its beginnings are fully fleshed out in The Fate of the Tearling. We get to see how their society used to be run and where everything went wrong. Seeing more of Mortmesne was particularly interesting. I have always enjoyed Johansen's ability to give you something you have a preconceived notion of and then tear it out from under you. She frequently makes you think of things in a new way, and the Mortmesne plot lines are a good example of that. I wasn't a fan of The Fate of the Tearling's storyline, however.. I liked where the story was heading when the second book ended but found myself frequently upset about how she navigated the plot in this book. I thought the Red Queen's redemption arc was completely off the wall. It felt so out of character for the villain we had come to know. I felt that they broke her, in a sense. She came off weak. I enjoyed learning more about Row. I liked that he was given a face and backstory, but the confrontation with him felt highly unsatisfying. I felt the narrative had difficulty carrying the multiple points of view from so many different characters. I found myself missing the rapport and witty banter between Kelsea and her guards. It took away a big part of what I enjoyed in previous books. I also felt there was too much of the dystopian element in this book. I liked getting answers and seeing a more complete history of the world, but I had such a hard time keeping track of everything that it was hard to enjoy the story. There were just too many varying points of view, and it made the narrative feel inconsistent. Another thing I disliked were the new developments in Kelsea and Pen's relationship. Although I don't require romance to enjoy a story, it's a big draw for me. I had liked where their relationship was heading, and the events of this book were frustrating with regards to them. The Fate of the Tearling left me wishing she had written a prequel instead, so I could have fully immersed myself in the characters and storylines I had come to love throughout the series. I detested the ending. It felt as though she took everything she had spent three entire books building and blew it all apart. I like that she had the courage to go in that direction but the narrative turn seemed weak. It felt like a cop out and I found myself a little confused, wondering what precisely had happened. I wish the series had ended with a little more hope. Perhaps that isn't realistic, but I don't really read fiction for realism. All in all, I did enjoy the book and it was largely well written. I just wish that the narrative had been more consistent, that more page time could have been dedicated to the storylines and characters of the present, and that the ending had been more satisfying.

Tandem - Further Together
http://site-overview.com/stats/wearetandem.org
The definition of Tandem is an arrangement in which two or more individuals are aligned and moving towards a common goal. This name change allows us - in a single word – to capture the essence of WHO we are and WHAT we do.  We work in tandem with our mamas, with our donors, and with our community.   After all, our WHY is human connection.  We passionately believe in this idea that when you have a group of people in your corner, who are deeply invested in you, you can overcome any crisis that comes your way.  An unplanned pregnancy, poverty, homelessness, job loss, domestic violence, mental health concerns... The truth is - we all face crisis at some point - it's inevitable.  We are there for those who face it alone. Our greatest desire is to walk in tandem with our mamas through whatever crisis they find themselves in because we believe so strongly in that truth. Much like a tandem sky dive, we are committed to the whole jump from exit, through free-fall, piloting the canopy, and finally…the safe landing. We are all about the relationship.  We often remind ourselves that while we do our best, we cannot solve all of the world’s problems for our mamas.  But what we can do is love them and walk along side them in their journey so that even when the next step is really hard to take, they never have to take it alone.  Together, in tandem, we overcome the barriers together.   We are cultivating a community of hope in which those in crisis come out on the other side to all of the promise that Life still has to offer.  We combine practical help with deep authentic relationships and those two things woven together are a powerful force.   There is something sacred that happens in that moment when the barriers come down, and we are no longer clients or staff or donors…we are just a community of people, drawn to one another for the purpose of sharing our stories in an authentic, transparent way that heals the soul.  We call it life-on-life ministry.  It’s powerful. It’s why we are different. It’s why what we do, works.

Creative Gift Ideas and Curious Goods
http://site-overview.com/stats/thingamagift.com
Despite having years of experience, most people are chronic bad gifters. What they are good at is procrastination. Having learned nothing from previous failures, they start their gift search in the 11th hour with a determined optimism and every good intention. But that perfect gift is elusive, their inspiration fades, and they end up scrambling in the last minutes to settle on something that is at least acceptable. This is a senseless waste of money and a waste of an opportunity to demonstrate how thoughtful they are. Bad gifting ends here. Step away from the necktie and back up slowly. Drop the scented candle. You can do better. There is still hope for you.

Diamond Investing News | Investing News Network
http://site-overview.com/stats/diamondinvestingnews.com
Buying diamond jewelry is a common practise, but buying diamonds and trying to turn a profit isn’t an endeavor most investors undertake. That’s largely because diamond investing is a little bit tricky, especially for those used to investing in precious or base metals, whose prices move more predictably. For one thing, unlike metals like gold and silver, diamonds are valued subjectively; there is no simple cost-per-ounce valuation system for them, so investors can be left wondering whether different appraisers will assign their diamond the same value. Colored diamonds, which are rising in popularity, only complicate that issue. Connected to valuation is the problem of selling a diamond. Most diamonds are sold through retail stores at very high profit margins — in other words, an investor looking to profit from selling a diamond necklace or other jewelry would like suffer an enormous loss. Those issues dissuade many investors from getting involved in the diamond space, but they are by no means unsolvable. Generally the trap market participants fall into is thinking that every diamond can be considered an investment; however, as industry experts have pointed out, that’s simply not true. So what types of diamonds are considered investment quality? Interestingly, most white diamonds do not fall into that category. That’s because about 98 percent of all diamonds are of the white variety, meaning they are not that rare. Essentially, while some can be a valuable investment, to do so they must be amongst the largest and highest quality. Many involved in the diamond space are instead looking to opportunities in the colored diamond space. Only around 2 percent of all diamonds are colored, meaning that they are very rare. Colored diamonds come in a myriad of colors, with red and blue being among the rarest and most pricy. Yellow diamonds fall on the more affordable end of the spectrum, and brown diamonds are cheaper still. For investors looking for an entry point to the diamond market, they may be options to consider. All that said, buying physical diamonds is by no means the only way to gain a foothold in the diamond market. Investing in diamond stocks is also a possibility, though doing so requires some careful thinking. That’s because diamond exploration is costly compared to exploration for other resources, and in today’s tough markets companies are receiving little funding. In terms of pricing, diamonds did not fare very well in the first half of 2015. However, hope remains amongst industry experts. John Kaiser of Kaiser Research said recently that he’s looking longer term for improvement, noting, “long term, if you’re optimistic about global GDP growth and believe that, say, 2020 and beyond India is going to finally get traction and start to imitate what China accomplished in the last 15 years, you’re going to see again expanding wealth and prosperity in the world.”
