Highway of Tears the film is about the missing or murdered women along a 724 kilometer stretch of highway in northern British Columbia. None of the 18 cold-cases since the 1960's had been solved, until project E-Pana (a special division of the RCMP) managed to link DNA to Portland drifter, Bobby Jack Fowler with the 1974 murder of 16 year-old hitchhiker, Colleen MacMillen. In Canada, over 600 Aboriginal women have been reported missing or been murdered since the 1960s. Viewers will discover what the effects of generational poverty, residential schools, systemic violence, and high unemployment rates have done to First Nations reserves and how they tie in with the missing and murdered women in the Highway of Tears cases. The truth is - we all face crisis at some point - it's inevitable.  We are there for those who face it alone. Our greatest desire is to walk in tandem with our mamas through whatever crisis they find themselves in because we believe so strongly in that truth. Much like a tandem sky dive, we are committed to the whole jump from exit, through free-fall, piloting the canopy, and finally…the safe landing. We are all about the relationship.  We often remind ourselves that while we do our best, we cannot solve all of the world’s problems for our mamas.  But what we can do is love them and walk along side them in their journey so that even when the next step is really hard to take, they never have to take it alone.  Together, in tandem, we overcome the barriers together.   We are cultivating a community of hope in which those in crisis come out on the other side to all of the promise that Life still has to offer.  We combine practical help with deep authentic relationships and those two things woven together are a powerful force.   There is something sacred that happens in that moment when the barriers come down, and we are no longer clients or staff or donors…we are just a community of people, drawn to one another for the purpose of sharing our stories in an authentic, transparent way that heals the soul.  We call it life-on-life ministry.  It’s powerful. Mission Statement Our primary audience is the child within every adult and the adult within every child.   We want to stimulate conversation within the groups that watch our films, discussion that leads to greater understanding, empathy, and imagination. It is of primary importance to us that we never re-create experiences. When people watch a Hungry Creature film, they are embarking on a journey into uncharted territory every single time. We will never emulate the successes of others; we will forge our own path. We do not view ourselves as competitors to other studios, other artists. We are allies in expression, with something different to show and say.   Values High Moral Standards     At Hungry Creature, we believe that violence and brutality is far too often shown as the only solution when dealing with conflict resolution. We will never show violence in a way that glorifies it, our films will always depict difficult conflicts with clarity, realism, and no gloss.     We believe that the personalities of our characters must be complex and raw, giving a platform for minorities, gender equality, and those without a voice. There is no place for harmful stereotypes within our films.     Every story must have deeper meaning, but this offering to the viewers cannot be preachy or judgemental in tone. It will be a treasure to be found for those who wish to dig, a spine for the narrative rather than an exoskeleton. Spirituality is to be respected. Scientific wonder is to be championed. Imagination is to be joyfully proclaimed. High Aesthetic Standards     It is of supreme importance that, as a studio, we are never chained to a singular artistic vision permanently. Aesthetic exploration on our end, coupled with our willingness to pursue radically different narratives than the norm, will only result in a greater sense of discovery for our viewers.     Feature length cg animated films, generally have a very slim sense of artistic variety when it comes to the overall image. We must always be radically participating in aesthetic innovation, exploring, and pursuing new forms of expression through image. A Community, not a Company     More than anything else, Hungry Creature exists for the people within its walls. Goals will be reasonable, overtime will be emergency only, and undue stress will be kept as far away from the artists as possible. This is a place to grow, to learn, to experiment. Our artists must be inspired, motivated, and look forward to coming to work each morning!     From the hero emptying the trash to the lead artist, ideas and inspiration are to be cherished and paid serious attention to. We want every member of the Hungry Creature family to feel safe, comfortable, and excited about our films! Because of our small size, wild ambitions, and unusual pursuits, Hungry Creature will not be able to compete with other studios when it comes to salary or benefits. It is important that, as every employee is a member of our extended family, their possible departure for higher-paying opportunities will be a joyful celebration for all! We recognize that given our low-budgets, we might not be a permanent financial fit for every member of our crew but we will do everything in our power to be a perfect emotional and creative fit for every member of the Hungry Creature Family. But what happens in between the headlines? And what can ordinary citizens and civic leaders do to ensure the youngest among us enjoy greater safety and security across the First Coast? Join TEDxFSCJ as we host a salon exploring local efforts to address how crime affects our city’s youth. The evening will feature two prominent young leaders, EVAC Movement senior Davin Brown and anti-human trafficking advocate Alyssa Beck, as well as State Attorney Melissa Nelson and New Town Success Zone Executive Director George Maxey. Drawing on their first-hand experience and expertise, our speakers will discuss the often unseen effects of violence and incarceration, the lived realities of racism and gender-based trauma, the economic roots of crime, and innovative policies within the criminal justice system. The salon will be held Wednesday, September 27th, at the FSCJ Advanced Technology Center (Downtown Campus), Room T-140/141, from 6:30-8:30 pm.
