Os Artistas Unidos formaram-se a partir do grupo que estreou, em 1995, “António, um Rapaz de Lisboa” de Jorge Silva Melo. Foi com espectáculos de elenco numeroso, peças sobre o aqui e agora ou outras do passado explicitamente políticas, que se fizeram os primeiros tempos da companhia: “O Fim ou Tende Misericórdia de Nós”, “Prometeu” (de JSM), “A Queda do Egoísta Johann Fatzer” de Brecht, “Coriolano” de Shakespeare. O Seminário “Sem Deus nem Chefe”, realizado na Antiga Fábrica Mundet do Seixal, em que foram criadas cinco pequenas produções, cada uma coordenada por um actor que nela participava, serviu de ensaio para os dois anos e meio de trabalho n’A Capital / Teatro Paulo Claro, encerrada pela CML em 29 de Agosto de 2002. Nesse período intenso, a aposta foi na dramaturgia contemporânea: Sarah Kane, Gregory Motton, Jon Fosse, David Harrower, Mark O’Rowe, Xavier Durringer, Spiro Scimone; Jorge Silva Melo, José Maria Vieira Mendes, Rui Guilherme Lopes e Francisco Luís Parreira entre os portugueses. Escolheram-se clássicos: Melville, Kleist, Kafka, Beckett, Pinter. Foram trinta estreias, vários acolhimentos e co-produções, seminários, leituras encenadas (como as dedicadas ao teatro escocês e neerlandês, ou às obras de Sarah Kane, Arne Sierens, Antonio Onetti). Com o fecho d’A Capital, depois de apresentarem “Baal” de Brecht, os Artistas Unidos mudaram-se para o Teatro Taborda, onde estiveram até Junho de 2005. Ali revelaram autores como os Irmãos Presniakov, Anthony Neilson, Davide Enia, Jean-Luc Lagarce; insistiram em Pinter, Scimone, Judith Herzberg, Jon Fosse, José Maria Vieira Mendes; e lembraram Joe Orton e Jacques Prévert. Em 2006, e depois de terem renunciado à utilização do Teatro Taborda, os Artistas Unidos estiveram instalados no Antigo Convento das Mónicas onde estrearam Antonio Tarantino, Juan Mayorga, Vieira Mendes e Gerardjan Rijnders, enquanto noutras salas apresentavam espectáculos de Judith Herzberg, Enda Walsh, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jesper Halle, Miguel Castro Caldas, Jorge Silva Melo ou José Maria Vieira Mendes. Além dos espectáculos e da produção de filmes, os Artistas Unidos organizaram exposições de Sofia Areal, Álvaro Lapa, Pedro Proença, Xana, Pedro Chorão, Miguel Ribeiro, Michael Biberstein, Ana Isabel Miranda Rodrigues, Sérgio Pombo, Barbara Lessing, Ana Vieira, Ângelo de Sousa, Manuel San Payo, Ivo, Nikias Skapinakis, Jorge Martins.
