“Learning from History” offers a platform for historical and citizenship education which focuses on twentieth-century history, and especially the National Socialist era.

I am a lover of living intentionally, experiential learning, and global thinking. An academic interdisciplinarian, I have degrees in Human Biology, Social Work, Ethics, Spanish Language, and recently a Master Degree in Global Public Health. I earned my chops in photography as a photojournalist, and in post processing as a photo-editor, in 2011 when I worked for a local daily newspaper for 1 year. Since then I have continued local freelance work, but have primarily focused on my true passion – travel photography. Forever hungry for novel experiences, and permanently thirsty for caffeine, I inevitably fall in love with every place I visit. It is my ongoing goal to belay all preconceived notions and enter every new place and community only wanting to learn and understand something new. Ask me about my personal beliefs and philosophies – they are always changing and evolving. I find I spend a lot of time in introspective thought, and so the pace of landscape photography is particularly satisfying. At the same time, conversation of any kind is my favorite. I am a talker, a listener, a thinker, an arguer, a lover.

Thank you for visiting my website! My love for photography began as a child. I remember going to the National Museum of the Air Force when I was 9 or 10 years old. I spent every penny I had buying and shooting all the rolls of 110 film I could get my hands on. It took me weeks to save up enough to get them all developed (aahhh digital). I found the pictures again a few years ago. The pictures were nothing spectacular, but I'll never forget the rush I got taking them. Jump ahead to high school where I took my first photography class and learned about exposure, composure, and developing. After that I got away from serious photography until just a few years back. My father got a fancy new camera, a Nikon D90, and I had to have one too. I tried out a lot of lower grade equipment before learning the reasons why the pro grade stuff cost soooo much. There really is a huge difference in what you can do with it. But then I hit another wall. Even though my gear was good, I couldn't get all the shots I was trying for. My dad was having similar issues and we discovered a local photography school, Light Photographic Workshops. And the rest, as they say, is history. Not really, but I did learn how to fully use my camera and have continued to strive to be a better photographer ever since. I am fortunate to live in an area filled with great places to shoot, and to have friends and family that are so supportive of my work.

I am developing programs would result in more opportunities for innovation and creativity in the community. Programs that focus on learning and innovation among children and young adults have substantial benefits to the local community and the state. Makerspace programs have the potential to nurture timeless skills such as curiosity, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity and the ability to learn on one’s own that will help prepare our children for their future careers. Many young adults will develop practical skills that can be applied to their own creative and entrepreneurial ideas.

I started my professional photographic journey as a videographer at CNN and then at C-SPAN in the early days of the cable industry. At C-SPAN I was one of 7 employees, located in a small make shift studio located in a business building in Alexandria, VA just outside of the District of Columbia. It was at C-SPAN where I created video wallpaper. The purpose, It acted as fill between programming. We would run continuous clips of slowly moving video that I shot panning left to right or right to left and up and down and pulling slowly away (my small contribution to cinema verite on cable) from various Federal buildings and other notable architecture found throughout our Nation's Capital. These clips lasted from between :10 to :30 minutes and I edited them in away that would include many, many of our national treasures. I picked up on film in 1967 when I bought an inexpensive plastic 35mm/125speed film camera for a Cub Scout activity. Fast Forward in 1984 my purchase through JC Penny's of a Canon AE-1 35mm and I never looked back and now I have a Canon Rebel Xti EOS. Very simple stuff actually. I take into consideration the following when I shoot. (1) time of day (2) composition (3) weather conditions (4) Physical position And another consideration now that digital is for many the go to medium...take a lot of shots. However, It's still an organic learning experience as I am discovering the beauty of our planet almost daily through my travels in Northern California and beyond. Street Photography is about how you capture what’s around you, how confident you are as a person, how you handle peoples reactions when or after you take their photo. I know it seems scary but just go for it, but not everybody feels confident in public with a camera and taking pictures of people, you need basic knowledge, it’s like laying a foundation before we build a house, it's what makes it strong. Street Photography is not everyone's cup of tea, best to do it for yourself, fill your curiosity. You don’t have to be a serious Street Photographer, as long this genre makes you get up and get out, that’s great. I believe we only gain something from focussing on what we do and keep on trying. I never stop learning when doing Street, everything about it fascinates me, from the people, shadows, shapes, to en empty road. Since I started Street photography, I never get bored. I do Street everywhere, weekends, during holidays, days out with friends, in good weather or bad weather, in broad daylight or at night. The Street is available to everyone who’s willing to do it, 24/7. I started my workshops early in 2017, it’s my great pleasure to introduce Street Photography to others and keep motivating them afterwards. I am always pleased to discover that many of my workshop attendees actually have the skills and understanding but need advice and demonstrations to begin with. I regularly see my workshop attendees doing well after workshops, they start “seeing things” which is the hardest part in Street photography. They gain the confidence to go out and the most important thing is they enjoy it, they feel that Street Photography gives them something to look forward, to go outside and practice. I think that’s wonderful. During the workshops I demonstrate my skills by showing some of my images that I have taken over many years, I point out good subjects that I spot on the Street and give them the explanation and of course I make sure my attendees doing a lot of practising to gain their confidence. My advice to beginners is: Go out, make lots of mistakes and importantly, enjoy it!
