The Race begins in Cape Elizabeth near Crescent Beach State Park on Route 77. The road conditions are flat or a slight downhill slant. The racers will proceed north and then bear right onto Old Ocean House Road, a narrow road that will rejoin Route 77.

Britain's Ocean City Running Series

There is probably no single race more famous than The Benihana Offshore Grand Prix. This race was known as the Indy 500 of Offshore Racing and was held in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, during the 1970's. The New Jersey Offshore Powerboat Racing Association has been the host club since racing started in Point Pleasant Beach some 40+ years ago. NJ Offshore (NJOPRA) is still a very active club with over 100 members and has kept the tradition of Offshore Racing alive on the Jersey Shore for all those years. Over the years, the name of the Point Pleasant Beach race has been changed each time a new sponsor was obtained. It's been called: The Hennessey Offshore Grand Prix, The Benihana Offshore Grand Prix, The Ray Catena Offshore Grand Prix, The New Jersey Offshore Grand Prix, The War at the Shore, the Jenkinson's Offshore Grand Prix and the year of 2005 it was called The Jersey Boyz Offshore Grand Prix. During the years, the race course has gotten smaller and shorter. In the Benihana days, the race was over 200 miles long running laps from NY's Fire Island to Seaside Heights NJ. One lap was about 80 miles. For the spectators, and there were many, the boats came by once an hour and only three or four times depending upon the race course configurations. Today the racecourse is a small 4 mile oval as close to the beach as possible. Since the beach drops off quickly, the boats usually run within 150 feet of the surf. Even the outside leg can be clearly seen from the shoreline. The NJ race has also seen its share of sanction flags. Originally, the race was the premier APBA National Offshore Race. This race ran on the third Wednesday of the month of July like clockwork. People would book their vacations around race week, as it was always a source of excitement. Back in 1975 a fast boat in NJ was a 21' Searay with a 188 Merc I/O. So when the big boats came to town, it was quite a show. Ed Smitty Smith has taken over the reigns at OPA and together with Augie The Godfather Pensa, President of the Jersey Boyz Offshore Racing Crews, NJOPRA and the Twisted Sisters, they will bring back the days of the old Benihana. Welcoming racers from all over the country to come and experience what it's like to race the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the New Jersey Shore.

The Volvo Ocean Race is the world's premier offshore race, an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour, which started over 37 years ago as the Whitbread Round the World Race. The 11th edition of the race starts in Alicante, Spain in October 2011 and concludes in Galway, Ireland, during early July 2012, The teams will sail over 39,000 nautical miles of the world's most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajai, Miami, Lisbon, and Lorient. The Volvo Ocean Race crews will experience life at the extreme as they race day and night for more than 20 days at a time, living on freeze-dried food and combating the harshest weather conditions the planet can offer. Images that capture harrowing feats in world-class sailing competition are frozen in perpetuity through Priscilla Parker's view finder. Serving as an organizing official and/or race committee member for local, national and international sailing regattas, Parker has managed to grab photographic stills of competitors pursuing victory in perilously rough, fast waters --- from the deck of a rocking, some times wet boat. On any given weekend, Priscilla experiences the saltwater rush that coexists themes for a greater cause --- raising funds and supporting sailing events to support cancer research and patient care. After becoming the first person to use computer technology for onboard scoring of Charleston Race Week in 2005, Parker was toting a camera as part other racing official gear -- generally a scoring pad, whistle, flags, and an accurate clock. After 30 years of either competitor or race committee member in sailing events, Parker figured it time she started recording the experience for enjoyment later. The switch from 35mm to digital brought about a new and different world of photography. Her shots have captured soaked racing jocks standing parallel to the waves on the edge of a sailboat; the ominous view of the Spirit of South Carolina tall ship as it passes under the Cooper River span; and colorful clusters of competitors that have come to Charleston from lands afar to test the Charleston currents. Her work has been featured in national sailing and boating publications, as well as local news media. The New Bern, NC native has become an indelible member of the Lowcountry sailing community as a member of the Charleston Ocean Racing Association, South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association, Charleston Yacht Club and volunteer with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Leukemia Cup Regatta and past volunteer for the Maritime Heritage Foundation. Her work speaks of her love for the sport and passion to immortalize the moment.
