Schoolkids Has Purchased CD Alley, Will Change Names March 1 Posted by David Klein @DKleinandFall on Fri, Feb 12, 2016 at 5:08 PM Come March 1, CD Alley—the cozy, narrow Chapel Hill record shop that Ryan Richardson has owned and operated since 2006—will not be CD Alley. Schoolkids Records , which left Chapel Hill in 2008, will make its return to the college town at CD Alley’s West Franklin Street location. This will be the third Schoolkids. Several factors compelled Richardson’s decision. For one, the store’s ten-year term is coming to an end shortly, and he figured “ten years felt like the right amount of time.” The agreement with Judge arrived just in time. With Richardson starting accounting school in May, the store would have closed for good in the next few months, anyway. Salvaging CD Alley’s legacy—and bringing Schoolkids back to Chapel Hill—were important to Schoolkids owner Stephen Judge. “There’s a lot of history there,” he says. “I grew up in Rocky Mount. When I came up for Carolina football games with my friends, we would always stop by Schoolkids. It was just part of the ritual.” Eight years ago, as general manager at Redeye Distribution in Haw River, Judge fought strenuously to keep Schoolkids from leaving Chapel Hill, whether by himself or with the help of his employers at Yep Roc and Redeye. In the end, he felt it was too risky to take on by himself. When Richardson discussed wanting to sell CD Alley, he was determined to make it work this time. “It’s always something that stuck in my side,” he says. "This is me setting things right." The transition will be smooth and devoid of hoopla, says Judge, whose other Schoolkids locations are in Raleigh and Durham. There won’t even be any new signage. Initially, the only significant change that shoppers can expect will be less frequent sightings of Richardson at the front desk. But the store’s other staff will remain on board. Richardson came to the store as an employee in 2000 and bought it six years later. He never planned to do it forever. “I’ve known all along that I couldn’t do this for the rest of my career,” he says. “I was going to have to change tracks at some point. I felt like, if I was gonna go back to school, I’d better do I before I let too much more time get away from me.” While he says he still enjoys his work, Richardson admits it takes more and more to keep up. “If there was one thing I don’t enjoy about it as much anymore, it’s just trying to stay ahead of the curve. But all in all, it’s still a lot of fun,” he says. “If you could have told me I’d own a shop on Franklin Street for ten years, I’d say that sounds like a dream come true.”

I love to read books and learn new techniques and skills along with more about myself. It's a way for us to grow not only as individuals but as business owners and entrepreneurs. There a ton of "self-help" books out there. Rarely, do they ever make sense nor are what they teach very realistic or practical to use. Recently I read a book that was a suggestion from an email newsletter I subscribe to from Pat Flynn. I have found Pat Flynn, who recommended this book, to be authentic, real and trustworthy. I decided to take a look at it and read it from start to finish within a week. The book is insightful, practical, and was an eye opener for me personally and professionally. The author is Gary Keller with Jay Papasan both who are popular online business people, I am guessing. The book takes you through the myths of multitasking and provides a great method for finding your ultimate purpose. It made me really reflect on what my ultimate purpose is in this life. Then it helps you narrow down, and narrow down, and narrow down to help you get to the actual task or activity that can help you towards your bigger purpose. The information applies to all facets of your life whether it is health, business, spiritual, personal or anything else. The main question asked throughout the book was, "What is the ONE Thing I can do today that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" The word phrase that really stuck out to me was "I CAN DO". Not what should I do, not what could I do. I find myself asking the question everyday but not before I defined my ultimate purpose. Want to know what I came up with? My Lifelong Purpose Statement "My purpose in the next five years is to be free of financial burdens that limit my ability to help myself, my family, other people, and my community. When I am free of those financial burdens, my purpose is to become wealthy enough to achieve my personal goals for my family, other people, and my community for the rest of my life and beyond. Leave a legacy for my family, other people, and my community." I know that is really broad and sort of vague but when I went through the process outlined in the book I could really narrow it down to the one task I can do at this moment that will move me toward that goal. Pretty cool, I think. The book is affordable, not costing more than any other book you would normally buy and you can purchase other companion pieces to go with it. I just enjoyed the book and got a lot out it, so I didn't find it necessary to purchase the other pieces. But you might decide you need more and that's okay. As you view my images you’ll find out a lot about me. For instance, I see natural landscapes and the creatures that call them home as being at the same time grand works of art and also places for renewal, connection and education. It’s probably also apparent that I love to travel. The world is a big, beautiful and fascinating place, and my travel images aim to show it in all its glory. Photographing people and their cultures is one big reason I travel, and I hope my images tell you something about what makes all of us unique, along with all that we share. In short, despite all my photographs of nature and landscape, I am also a photographer of people, especially in those candid moments: with family or friends, with their pets, or simply alone. I’m very serious about photography as art, as a way to communicate what is more difficult (even impossible) to say with words. I don't tend to shoot popular subjects or incorporate trendy looks into my images. My influences from without are as numerous and varied as the whole world is. Influences from within include my past careers as an earth scientist and also a teacher. Both continue to inform my photography. For example my landscape images often highlight aspects of the region’s geologic history. My strong affinity for nature and animals of all kinds is a major influence as well. Global travel has given me a keen awareness of human impacts on the environment. We are forever connected after all - to the earth which gives us everything, and to each other. My Story and How I Started My name is Jason R. Samy. I’ve been taking pictures as long as I can remember, but I got my first experience with a 35mm SLR in my early adult life. Over time I converted to digital and I haven't ever looked back. My portfolio displays many styles of photography that I’ve learned over the years and I continue to expedient with different techniques. I started off shooting anything in front of me, but ask anyone who knows me; I’m rarely without my camera. Outside of taking pictures of my friends, family, and things around me, I started shooting different dance events and shows. That got me started on some portrait and portfolio work. And this eventually led to my first engagement and wedding shoots. I can say because of my experiences, that i am somewhat a “jack of all trades” kind of photographer. I am still striving to find my niche in photography and learn with every push of the trigger on my camera, but I love to photograph everything. A lot of events in life happen in the blink of an eye, and photos are once in a life time moments that I like to capture and share with everyone. Photography started as a hobby for me, and as lucky as it sounds to some, it is now a passion that I get paid to do. Thank you for visiting my website! My love for photography began as a child. I remember going to the National Museum of the Air Force when I was 9 or 10 years old. I spent every penny I had buying and shooting all the rolls of 110 film I could get my hands on. It took me weeks to save up enough to get them all developed (aahhh digital). I found the pictures again a few years ago. The pictures were nothing spectacular, but I'll never forget the rush I got taking them. Jump ahead to high school where I took my first photography class and learned about exposure, composure, and developing. After that I got away from serious photography until just a few years back. My father got a fancy new camera, a Nikon D90, and I had to have one too. I tried out a lot of lower grade equipment before learning the reasons why the pro grade stuff cost soooo much. There really is a huge difference in what you can do with it. But then I hit another wall. Even though my gear was good, I couldn't get all the shots I was trying for. My dad was having similar issues and we discovered a local photography school, Light Photographic Workshops. And the rest, as they say, is history. Not really, but I did learn how to fully use my camera and have continued to strive to be a better photographer ever since. I am fortunate to live in an area filled with great places to shoot, and to have friends and family that are so supportive of my work.

Written by Rachel Jervis, Advanced Leadership Training Program Class of 2017 On May 5, 2017, I graduated from RIHEL's Advanced Leadership Training Program (ALTP). On October 15, 2017 I completed my first marathon. The latter is a direct result of the first. I've been a runner since moving to Colorado in 2007. Over the years I've completed numerous short and mid-distance races, including six half marathons. I never planned to run a marathon. I'd joke "I'm such a slow runner that I'd have to stop mid-race for a meal." I feared injuring myself, abhorred the time commitment, and was dubious that I could physically complete a marathon even if I wanted to. In short, marathons held no appeal to me. Fast-forward to April 2017, when I was in the homestretch of the RIHEL Advanced Leadership Training Program (ALTP). Since attending college in Boston, I find myself glued to Boston Marathon results and human-interest stories each Patriot's Day. Unlike previous years, some part of my brain wondered if I could conquer 26.2 miles. In a row. I confessed this thought to a friend on a long run the following weekend. Having completed multiple marathons and a full ironman, she assured me that with proper training I could finish a marathon. That evening I thought, Maybe I should run a marathon. One of my focuses during the ALTP was to use strong, confident language (no more "I just wanted to ask if perhaps you could…"). In discussing this, a RIHEL classmate told me that she's stopped saying "should" as it implies value/judgement. From that point on, I worked to eradicate "should" from my vocabulary. So when I caught myself thinking I maybe should run a marathon, I rephrased with confident language: I am going to run a marathon. The next words out of my mouth were equally strong: Oh %*@$, I'm going to run a marathon! When I caught myself thinking I maybe should run a marathon, I rephrased with confident language: I am going to run a marathon The ALTP demonstrated the value of a documented plan and skilled mentorship/coaching. Accordingly, I hired a fantastic coach ( to get me to the start line feeling confident and across the finish line still enjoying running. I expected the mindfulness and emotional intelligence work during the ALTP to increase my confidence marathon training, but I didn't realize how interrelated they would be. In addition to four runs a week, two strength sessions, daily core work, and stretching, my coach assigned weekly "mental toughness" readings or podcasts. I found myself talking about the ALTP and sending her RIHEL resources in response to my homework. During five months of training, I ran 539.73 miles to prepare to run the marathon. I went from a goal of "just finishing" to thinking that maybe, just maybe, I could complete my first marathon in under four and a half hours. I met my coach for a "shake out run" the Thursday before the race. The following day I was flying to Detroit. The weather forecast called for heat and humidity. Despite summer heat conditioning, there was no way I could safely run 26.2 miles in under 4.5 hours in the predicted weather; and if I tried I could risk not finishing at all. My coach reassured me that I was trained for a 4.5 hour race, but it wasn't 4.5 hour race weather. I agreed to readjust my goal to complete the race in under 5 hours and promised to go out nice and slow. Only if I felt good at mile 10 would I pick up my pace, but ultimately I would run conservatively. Driving home from my last coaching session I burst into tears. I didn't want to try for a sub-5 hour marathon. I wanted a cool, crisp fall morning where I could push the pace. I'd trained for months, couldn't the weather cooperate? Mental toughness and emotional intelligence be damned, I had a meltdown. On race day morning, my father and 5 friends who'd come to cheer me on showed up in the hotel lobby wearing matching "Run, Rachel, Run" shirts. I burst into tears again, this time tears of gratitude for all the people who had supported me along my marathon journey. Starting (unknowingly) with my RIHEL classmate who told me she doesn't say should anymore. I dug into my emotional intelligence reserves and told myself today I run the best first marathon I can. On race day morning, my father and 5 friends who'd come to cheer me on showed up in the hotel lobby wearing matching "Run, Rachel, Run" shirts. ... told myself today I run the best first marathon I can. It was 70 degrees at the 7am start time, I sweat more in that race than all my training runs combined, and my visor blew off in the final quarter mile because the wind was so strong. But it was an amazing race day. I started slow, felt good enough to pick up the pace at mile ten, chatted with other runners, and kept going. I never hit the proverbial wall. When my friends met me at mile 24 to pace me in, I was all smiles. I crossed the finish line at four hours, 51 minutes, and 44 seconds. This summer I'm focusing on some shorter trail runs to challenge myself with hills and enjoy the mountain scenery. I plan to run my second marathon in 2019. It will give me the opportunity to strive for a 4.5 hour marathon and continue practicing resilience and other ALTP skills.
