 “Still Real Life” – [with artists Alicia Mordenti and Kari Herer] shows what happens when two ceramic majors from the University of Idaho (BFA’s ’01) collaborate on a shared idea (a year-long dialogue evolving over many visits, e-mails, and phone calls) and end up in a gallery space six months later showing the hard-wrought results.  Their friendship over the many years since college has grown in strength as they both met with the real life challenges of marriage, children, and careers.   The work shows a parallel in direction, impulse, and intent.  Fascination with light works its way into all of the images.  Formal approach to the flat surface they have placed before them to work with, to master (unlike the 3-dimensional world of their youth) mirrors in effort and difficulty their own always-in-motion moving-forward lives.  Flowers and their kids end up as both artist's subject matter; the momentary beauty and celebrated joy offered by these ----each day, and without stop– their content.  Both artists are inspired by their home environments; capturing moments in chaotic fragments with the snapping of a camera’s shutting lens.  No matter the final art medium used, (Herer, using photography – both digital and medium format Polaroids (one-of-a-kinds) and Mordenti, painting from photographs in oil and acrylic on panels and canvas) their combined work stems from that impulsive snap of the fleeting:  the flower that loses its petals far too early; the child that grows up far too quickly.  Both artists realize that “the moment will always trump the thought-over”; the camera’s capturing of chaos in progress the most direct path to the real.  The art image we are left with may be still, but the reality it reflects, the life it tries to show in painted or photographed form – is anything but.

A club is all about its members, and Laurel Country Club has always been comprised of the most active and successful of Laurel's residents. For nearly 100 years it has lived up to its original purpose which was engagement in social and sporting activities that will accrue to the general welfare of community life in Laurel and surrounding areas. Several changes in recent years have laid the groundwork for the resurgence of Laurel Country Club to its esteemed position within the community, including the cleanup and restoration of the elegant clubhouse, as well as working to continuously improve the quality of our food and service. Recruiting, hiring and training the best people available for our staff, we're improving the quality of every experience at Laurel Country Club. Hand picking from the finest professionals available has given Laurel Country Club a staff unrivaled within the area. The club has also begun a move toward a more family oriented approach, reaching out and recruiting more young members. This insurgence of youth is breathing fresh, new life into the country club. We have converted our swimming pool to a saltwater pool and have increased services available poolside, both of which have aided in the growth and participation of the younger set. On any given summer day the pool at Laurel Country Club is a happening place. Constantly soliciting opinions from members of all age groups allows us to plan events that appeal to our members. We are here to enhance the experience of each member every time he or she visits the club. The board of directors is focused on immediate needs and long-term objectives that will continue to increase the value of membership at Laurel Country Club. BECA is the BECA.org Foundation, Inc. (BECA means "scholarship" in Spanish.) BECA is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works in Nicaragua. It facilitates technical school scholarships for high school graduates who are serious about continuing their education, but don't have the financial means to do so. Candidates are qualified via a six month screening process that includes a computer course and full-time volunteering in a primary school. Those that finish receive a scholarship to study a technical career of their choice. The scholarship includes transportation expenses, tuition and books. BECA supervises student progress by monthly visits to their school or home.
